NYC issues rules on safety harnesses
Contractors working in New York now have to submit detailed plans for worker safety-harness systems at high-rise construction sites. The city's Department of Buildings issued the new regulatory requirements <http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001Dtl7dRNRjPgTouzV6bFebZlS_cKMZRQ6qdBAVFqrbh9jDr9PdamuU8KUy0FbtawJ23tZxhmJb2kj8mDVdXy9Bb4m8FCNmipyoKIH4lwZ2BiWJ5nKUU7PR_vs9kcbjgycZftLXabxAWFYOXG9Xc_8NUaz_aIYz43Jc31iM9VtA9JnOjWeK7vWm02VCXJep09Z> (.pdf file) in response to the death of a window installer in April. The man fell nine floors after his safety harness failed. Department investigators said the harness was improperly installed.
Contractors must obtain engineer-approved drawings of any new safety harness systems that are built into concrete, and site superintendents must sign off on inspections for the harnesses, officials said.
